Day 44 - St. Anthony, Newfoundland

Day 44 August 5, 2013

Our day began with the now familiar sound of the bus back-up alarm and Dan’s smiling face at 8:15 am.

After reminders of which side is red and black, we were on our way to the Viking Village.

The silhouettes on the hilltop were impressive even in the fog.

We found a couple Vikings that missed the last ship home a thousand years ago.

Before our trip across the meadow we were greeted by a pixie- Irish tongued-Viking (Lucille), who shared a “quickie” about the Old Farts she was guiding.

We had a chance to experience the living quarters.  Walls constructed of peat bricks to them six foot thick with wood supported sod roofs.  Smoke holes in each of the four sections.  The weaver in the women’s work room explained the urine was used in dying the yarn.

We saw two moose in the distance and the bus group saw some up close and personal-thanks Jim for sharing your photos.

Our next stop was Nordstead-“A VIKING PORT OF TRADE”.  The resident sheep greeted each of us as we passed his pen.

We saw the ship SNORRI, had the chance to be kings and queens with crowns, thrones, swords etc.

Madi learned how to
do single needle knitting

and nobody messes with the hatchet throwing preacher!

Our next stop was at Dark Trickle- toured the bog and saw all the different wild berries they  process (moose tracks everywhere!).

We met Sabastian and Nevis, two beautiful Newfoundland dogs-one of them fell in love with Diane.

Back to the campground for lunch then back on the bus.  Our visit to the Grenfell Properties told of Grenfell’s work to provide health care for northern Newfoundland and Labrador, murals in the hospital lobby were wonderful and many toured the home.
