Day 20 - Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia

On July 12 we visited a few sites in the Annapolis Royal area.   The day was gorgeous.

Our first stop for the day was at Port Royal Habitation.  The gentleman who spoke to the group explained the various changes in the area from English and French governments.  He explained how hats were made from the beaver fur.  They would use the fur and not the pelt and the hats were made overseas.  He also explained the different names of the wooden shoe.  He called the shoe “sabot.”   The fort was beautifully restored.

The next stop was the Historic Gardens.  The grounds were beautifully landscaped.   A replica of an Acadienne house with vegetable garden was included on the premise.

We then had lunch at a German bakery.  The lunch included soup, sandwich with homemade buns and a delightful dessert.   The ownership of the café has been run by the same family for over 35 years.

From there, we had an employee talk about Fort Anne.  The fort was name after Queen Victoria’s daughter Anne.  It also was controlled at various times by the English and French.   In the building there were  four needlepoint pictures depicting the different eras.

Some of the group also stopped at the Tidal Power Plant to check out how the generators work.
